Training Presenters

Each of Asdem's training and special events features one or more specialised experts from various sectors of the oil industry. A brief background of each of Asdem's most frequent presenters is shown below.

Andrew Wilding, Managing Director of Asdem Pte Ltd., Singapore.

Andrew Wilding, Managing Director of Asdem Pte. Ltd., Singapore, is a maritime lawyer who specialises in the oil industry with over 25 years' experience in drafting, negotiating and resolving disputes in energy, marine, and transportation contracts for ship owners, ship managers, charterers, commodity traders and their insurers. Andrew qualified professionally in London, and was an Associate at the Hong Kong office of Sinclair Roche and Temperley prior to joining the Singapore office of Stephenson Harwood where he was a Partner, responsible for establishing and running the shipping litigation department and before moving to the commercial side of the industry and setting up Asdem's Singapore office. Andrew has lectured for academic and professional institutions in Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, London, and in the United States. He is the author of numerous published articles and has contributed to a number of books on Maritime Law including working on Intertanko's Guide to Tanker Charterparties and books published by The Society of International Gas Tankers and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO).

Amol R. Deshmukh, Head of Operations, Asdem India

Captain Amol R. Deshmukh is a Master Mariner with an L.L.M degree in Maritime law from the University of Southampton. He is presently in the process of qualifying as an advocate in India and has over 17 years of experience in the maritime industry. Amol spent over eleven years at sea during which he served with various major tanker operators which allowed him to gain significant experience on crude oil, product and chemical tankers. Until recently, Amol setup and headed the global shipping claims team at Scorpio Group. During his 4-year tenure at Scorpio, he spent considerable time in analysing and negotiating demurrage claims and acted as the first point of contact for all shipping disputes within the group's fleet of owned and chartered vessels. Amol's role involved providing legal advice to the commercial team and liaising with P&I Clubs, correspondents, surveyors and solicitors to ensure prompt and efficient handling of claims and disputes. Amol was also closely associated with the major IG Clubs and managed a variety of claims related to demurrage, charterparties bills of lading, cargo, crew, collision, allision, grounding and general average.

In his present role, Amol is responsible for the daily operations of the demurrage centre and Asdem's India office.

Jeremy Davies, Partner, Holman Fenwick Willan

Jeremy Davies, Partner, Holman Fenwick Willan, Geneva from 1 October 2010, was formerly Senior Partner at Davies Johnson & Co. He qualified as a solicitor in 1981. Whilst doing articles at Ince & Co Jeremy started dealing with demurrage cases in the oil trading industry. He then spent 4 years working for Assuranceforeningen Gard in Norway. While at Gard he was largely responsible for producing the first international version of Gard's highly respected P&I Handbook. On returning to the UK in 1985, he worked for Sinclair Roche & Temperley for 3 years, during which time he was involved in a number of High Court cases and arbitrations relevant to tanker demurrage, in particular the "Fjordaas". In 1990 he started the firm of Davies Grant & Horton, to which Davies Johnson & Co is a successor practice. Holman Fenwick Willan, Geneva specialises in shipping and international trade disputes and Jeremy counts a number of oil companies and oil traders amongst his clients.

Tony Yates, BP Oil International Ltd.

Tony Yates, BP Oil International Ltd. Tony holds a Master Mariners Class I Certificate of Competency and sailed on tankers for 13 years. He subsequently worked as a marine technical surveyor in the U.S., before joining an International inspection company where he served as Regional Manager for the U.S. Eastern Seaboard for several years before returning to the UK in order to take up a position with BP's Cargo Assurance (Loss Control) team. Over recent years Tony has held a number of managerial roles and for several years ran a team of approximately 100 staff as Head of Operations for BP Oil International Ltd, based in Canary Wharf, London until he retired from BP on 31 March 2014.

Martin Stokes B.Sc (Hons)

Martin Stokes B.Sc.(Hons). Martin trained as an analytical chemist and worked initially for ICI before joining the international inspection company, Caleb Brett, in 1975. He has been based in Houston, Singapore and Nigeria and obtained first-hand operational experience working with the Sumed pipeline in Egypt. He has wide experience of all aspects of quality and inspection relating to oil cargoes. He recently retired from his role in Intertek Caleb Brett coordinating all the company's inspections in Europe, Africa and the Middle East and is now Asdem senior technical consultant.

Phil Stalley, HubSe Ltd and Consultant to the Oil and Tanker Industry

Phil Stalley, HubSe Ltd (Demurrage Software) and Consultant to the oil and tanker industry. Until 2008 Phil was the manager of BPOI's Demurrage Team in London handling the negotiation and settlement of oil trading and charter party demurrage claims in support of BP's European trading activities. His responsibilities included freight, deviation and ancillary expenses incurred under charter parties. Phil spent 37 years with BP in a variety of posts covering operational and commercial aspects of the tanker business. Phil was a major contributor to the drafting of BPVOY4 and the laytime and demurrage provisions of BP's trading terms. He is a regular speaker at training seminars and industry conferences.
